Precautions

Therapy with Tretinoin may make your skin more susceptible to sunburn and other adverse effects of the sun. Apply a moisturizer with sunscreen every morning after cleansing. Also, try to avoid excessive exposure to wind or cold.

If excessive peeling or irritation occurs, then reduce use to two nights a week. If redness, swelling, or irritation continues, discontinue use.

Be Patient: Tretinoin takes time to work deep within your skin. Some discomfort or peeling may occur in early days of treatment. This should subside in 2 to 4 weeks. By 3 to 6 weeks, acne may worsen. This is normal. Continue using Tretinoin and you should notice an improvement in 6 to 12 weeks.

What is Tretinoin?

Tretinoin is a Vitamin-A in the form of retinoic acid (retinoid). It is a more effective retinoid than its cousin retinol, which you can find in many over-the-counter products.

Tretinoin smooths and exfoliates your skin while reducing oil production, acne and discoloration from aging and sun damage.

How does Tretinoin work?

Tretinoin works by naturally increasing the speed that your body creates new skin-cells.

Tretinoin is formulated in a way that is “ready to use” – meaning that when it gets absorbed into your body, it can instantly and naturally be transformed to usable Vitamin-A, the precursor needed to increase new skin cell growth and to build new elastin and collagen.

Where do I apply Tretinoin?

Apply Tretinoin onto your forehead, chin, and cheeks, and then spread it lightly over your entire face area.

Avoid the corners of your eyes, nose, and mouth. Use a recommended moisturizer and sunscreen. Avoid direct sunlight, beach, and chlorine water.

How long does it take for Tretinoin to work?

You will usually see an improvement in acne, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, reduction in pore size and roughness within 6 to 12 weeks.

Which concentration of Tretinoin should I use?

Higher strength tretinoin achieves results faster, but with more side effects such as dryness, irritation, redness, and sun sensitivity.

If you have sensitive skin or high sun exposure, it may be beneficial to use lower strength tretinoin products to improve the skin while protecting it from irritation.

What is better, Tretinoin cream or gel?

Tretinoin creams are recommended for use during winter months because creams give more moisture and improve the skin’s natural elasticity and texture. Creams are generally better for fine-line and wrinkle treatments.

Tretinoin gels are recommended for use during summer months because gels consist of a heavy spirit and have a slight drying effect. Gels are generally better for acne treatments.

What happens if I stop using Tretinoin?

If you stop using Tretinoin or are inconsistent with your treatment, any improvements you see may disappear over time. Always use the product as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

What is Tretinoin Purge?

The Tretinoin Purge refers to the first 3 weeks of use when your skin starts to push out accumulated oil and dead skin cells. The “purge” is a period every Tretinoin user suffers through before their skin turns into smooth, healthy-clear skin. As a result, you will see your skin worsen before it gets better.

The Tretinoin Purge is very common and completely normal. Try moisturizing more, both in the mornings and at night, and also try asking your health provider for their opinion on antibiotics. Many users of Tretinoin find it helpful to use a combination of Tretinoin, oral antibiotics, and topical antibiotics for the best results. Commonly prescribed antibiotics are Doxycycline and Clindamycin Phosphate.
